Child Protection (Section 47) Enquiry

What is a Child Protection (Section 47) Enquiry?

A Child Protection (Section 47) Enquiry is a legal duty the local authority has under the Children Act 1989. It means we must look into concerns where there is a worry that a child:

  • Is suffering significant harm
  • Is likely to suffer significant harm

The purpose is to understand what is happening, assess risk and decide what is needed to keep the child safe.
