In the last five years, 3,615 people have sadly drowned in the UK and Ireland. This year, Drowning Prevention Week is helping young people aged 13–17 learn how to stay safe, because more people their age have been getting into danger in the water.
Swimming is a great skill, but it isn’t the only way to stay safe. It’s also important to know how to be careful around water. You can stay safe by:
- Always going near water with friends or family
- Stopping and thinking about dangers before you go in
- Knowing what to do if someone is in trouble
The good news is that accidents in water can be stopped. Groups like RLSS UK teach people how to stay safe and how to help in an emergency.
