When Children and Young People are not looked after properly (Neglect)

Children need certain things to grow up safe and happy—like food, clean clothes, a safe place to live, love, and someone to look after them.
All children deserve to be looked after. That means having food, clean clothes, a safe place to live, and someone who listens and helps them when they need it.
Neglect is when a child doesn’t get the things they need to be safe, healthy, or cared for. It might be when adults forget or don’t provide help, food, or attention.

This might be when a child :

  • Doesn't have enough food
  • Is not being kept clean or safe
  • Doesn't have someone to make sure they are ok

Or,

  • If a child is often left alone when they’re too young to be safe
  • If no one helps them when they’re ill or hurt
  • If they don’t have warm clothes when it’s cold
If a child is being neglected, it is never their fault. Adults are responsible for taking care of children.
If you ever feel worried about yourself or another child, you can talk to a trusted adult—like a teacher, parent, carer, or school staff member.
Remember:
  • It’s always okay to ask for help
  • You won’t get in trouble for telling someone

Most children are looked after really well. There are lots of adults whose job is to keep children safe.
You can also speak to someone at either Childline or Barnardo's who will help and advise you.
